A Little Something To Lift The Spirits!

Firstly, I'd just like to apologise for this blog not being as long as I would like, but I've not been too well for over a week now. I guess it's that time of year, everybody around me seems to be suffering with something, or has the January blues. So, with all that in mind, what better reason than to just search Folksy for items to lift our spirits, make us smile and think of those better times ahead? The very talented people of Folksy do that type of thing so well, it would seem that there is no difficulty in stumbling across bright and colourful items which bring a smile to your face and before you know it, your mood is lifted and you're feeling a whole lot better already!

I hope it works for you too and you enjoy my choices for today's blog. I challenge any one of you not to smile when you see 'Daisy The Happy Cow'!

Lots of friends having babies just now so I thought I'd see what was available for the sweet little darlings. Lots of just about everything for the little rugrats! And here's just a wee selection!

I don't think Folksy can stress enough just how important your images are to prospective buyers. Thinking about it - it's the only way they can decide on whether to buy your item. I know I'm one of the first to look at my own items and think it really needs to be cleaner, brighter, cropped more, sharper or less cluttered and yet I still put it up.

There are suggestions on lots of help forums to set the scene, create an atmosphere, or keep backgrounds uncluttered and white or present your work holding it, don't put it on a person or always use natural bright light. So many ways and I for one, now need to be the designer and maker, the photographer, the branding expert, the networker and the stylist!!!

So I thought I'd show what I consider as good images and photography. My mantra in anything I do is to use the KISS approach - keep it simple stupid!! (well, most of the time) So all the Folksy aficionados, please give us and our readers your twopence worth too - we'd love to hear what you think or do you have any hints for us?

Funky Boho

Contrasting backgrounds work well but be very careful as black backgrounds can be too harsh for certain colours and items. This photograph enhances the cream card and image really well.

Mini Magpie

Nice clean (and white!) background - all too often I see grey/off white. It's uncluttered and not fighting with anything else so I know what I'm getting.

Little Sister Lucy

A beautiful scene setter here creating a lifestyle image too - just a simple brown couch and nicely cropped. I'm interested in this so I would go and see the next image to look at the details - it's caught my eye.

Tea Fairy Designs

Natural backgrounds enhance work beautifully, again, this is a clear no nonsense photograph showing exactly what you would get - it's clear and sharp and uncluttered.

Janine Basil

Lovely photograph here - I can see clearly the scale of the hair clip as there is a lovely model present who has been dressed to complete 'the look'. I don't design personal items such as scarves, dresses, cardis, or hair accessories and perhaps shop owner Janine can offer advice here. But, do you show the item on a human being or not? Are buyers concerned about hygiene etc? Should you use a dummy or a teacup accessorie type thing to show your work off? I shall let you ponder this......

Misskukie

A great example of cropping and the use of a cup edge? to hang the earrings on. Just what I discussed about the hairclip above. It is also possible to show your work without wearing it if you're concerned about this hygiene question. Good use here of the micro setting we all have on our digital camera these days and a very steady hand!

Miel Makes

You don't have to always show the full item. I love this excellent close-up cropped image that I would call a 'tease' image. I like the colours and patterns shown so I would go on to check out the other images and find out more about the items. Notice the shop's name on the image - sometimes a great idea especially like this photo, where it is subtle and doesn't take over the picture.

This is not an exhaustive range of successful photographic techniques that work really well but they are a good starting point for any Folksy newbies or shops that are reviewing their items to improve them. I am about to go over to my shop and see if I can do better too.

Let It Snow!

It's getting quite near to Christmas now and I'm sure we're all starting to feel festive and somewhat Christmassy! I for one really love a white Christmas, a proper Christmas card type scene to wake up to on Christmas morning. I wonder if that might be in store for us this Christmas. It's a big 'fingers crossed' for me on that one! Maybe that's the child in me coming out, I don't know.

For my blog for 'Found on Folksy' this time, I have chosen images which give me that warm Christmas glow and sum up all things festive.

It's here - I just wanted to find out what we all thought about the new Folksy website??? Looks good so far - struggled a bit to upload a 'sold item' but I'm sure it'll take a wee bit time to get it all up and running smoothly. I love the layout and the graphics - simple and clean. The item images are bigger and clearer although I would have liked to be able to re-arrange the first page of my shop. But thumbs up Folksy!!! I will now have to improve my pics!

Inspiration from Nature

Nature is a very important part of my life. I draw much of my creativity and inspiration from my surroundings. I also find that a lot of my thinking time takes place when I'm following some of my outdoor pursuits. I have two lurchers and a horse so much of my time is spent outside and often braving the elements of the North Yorkshire coast! Some of my best ideas have come to me when I've been driving the 18 mile round trip to the stables, or whilst I've been there watching the dogs run around, or watching my horse roll on the grass, or gallop across the fields. For me personally, there is no better feeling than being outside and enjoying nature and our beautiful surroundings. I'm very fortunate to live on the North Yorkshire coast, in a very small town, where I'm surrounded by the beach, the North Yorkshire Moors and no end of beautiful lush green countryside. Who could fail to be inspired in such a beautiful part of the country?

My choices for today are items I've come across recently, which appeal to me because of my love of nature and beautiful things inspired by it. I hope you all enjoy them too.

Sheep are an all time favourite of mine and obviously they are a very popular sight around North Yorkshire. Aileen has captured a typical landscape of sheep in the heather perfectly. This pendant is an exquisite work of art, with such wonderful attention to detail. To incorporate the piece into a pendant setting is perfect and truly inspired.

A little bit of fun, but you just have to love this one don't you? I adore chickens and I love to see them running around up at the farm. I have created many pieces of handpainted wood which incorporate the odd chicken or two!

'Raku Horse' by Tina Devlin

This beautiful horse sculpture appeals to me as I just love the form and shape of horses and the fluid lines. Horses are notoriously hard to draw and paint, so I imagine fairly hard to sculpt as well, but Tina has made a beautiful job of this. I just love it.

I have spent many hours walking on the local beaches, either with dogs, horses, children, or all of the above! Beach walks are the perfect way to blow away the cobwebs, clear your thought processes and seek inspiration - works every time!

Lots of my own jewellery and handpainted wood pieces incorporate birds and flowers, again much in keeping with my love of all things in nature, so I've included this particularly lovely piece in my collection. I haven't seen anything like this before and I just love the mix of both the 'vintage inspired' and contemporary design elements.

I am a big fan of the work of Paul at Phoenix Glass and have only recently included some of his beautiful Christmas decorations in one of my posts for Found on Folksy. Paul is also, quite obviously, very much inspired by nature and I just had to include his gorgeous dangly sheep as they are just a complete joy! I would have loved to have included one of his bright and colourful tree frogs, but didn't think one would fit with my theme of inspiration gleaned from the surroundings of North Yorkshire - I've never come across a bright and funky tree frog - yet! One day maybe .....

and last of all, but by no means least, I've included this truly beautiful photograph, because this is the sort of thing which inspires me personally on a daily basis. My animals are a huge part of my life and through them, I experience all sorts of things I would probably never have embarked upon. They get me away from my work and out in the beautiful countryside every single day and they give me a huge amount of pleasure. For me, being able to live a happy and fulfilled life, in beautiful surroundings, is core to being creatively inspired.

argh!!! ........ Christmas!!!! I don't like to see the shops with goodies till about Christmas Eve. Only kidding! I doubt there are many people on this planet who have not been touched by his brilliance in one form or another. Or should that be W.I.S.E??? I thought it would be fun to go through Folksy and look for great pieces from all over this creative island of ours. We still have traditions running throughout the whole of the UK from The Orkney's to Cornwall and Newcastle through to Llandudno and Belfast - it's great to see that they are thriving in all their various ways.

I also enjoy seeing traditional materials also being used in a more contemporary way which, hopefully, will encourage these crafts to continue.

Jammy Dodgers and Creativi-tea!

Well, this is quite an honour to be here and to be writing my first blog for Found on Folksy. Normally I would celebrate in some way, perhaps with a large cup of tea and a jammy dodger biscuit. For those of you who already know me, I do have rather a reputation for liking the occasional cup of tea ...... OK, I admit it, LOTS of tea!!! The odd jammy dodger biscuit makes an appearance as well, although not for long and certainly not as often as I would like them to!

So, in recognition of being asked to blog for 'Found on Folksy' and very much in honour of my love for tea and jammy dodgers, I have put together a treasury of beautiful and inspiring pieces of work from the very talented and creative people of Folksy. To me, these pieces show how a truly creative person can draw inspiration from everyday, possibly mundane, items to produce something inspiring, uplifting and desired by many.

I hope you will enjoy my lighthearted journey through the pages of Folksy and share in the appreciation of these unique and inspired pieces of work.

I love the quirkiness of this print and the fact that it depicts the typically British tradition of tea drinking. The use of cockney rhyming slang can't help but make you smile.

I'd been chatting with Kirsten about my first blog on FoF and I suddenly thought about the old story of how do creatives get inspiration - how do they refresh, renew, revive and go forward? As a practicing designer of many many years and a lecturer in art and design it's been an ongoing adventure leading me in lots of different directions.

Websites like Folksy and the web itself are full of visually interesting stimuli. I tend to avoid my specialism for inspiration as I think, for me, it's really important to go outwith my disciplines. It gives me an opportunity to look differently at what I see. My training doesn't kick in so I don't start to analyze what I'm looking at - I get the chance to absorb the simplicity and colour of polished wood, beautiful textures, pattern and shapes, atmosphere in a well taken photograph or sharp black and white.

Perhaps some of these inspirational items below will take you in a different direction or just give you the idea to go off and investigate absolutely nothing to do with your specialist area. So come on knitters go off and look at some wonderful graphic design and all you painters out there, why not take a look at mixed media or fashion! You'll be surprised at what might happen!

Found on Folksy finds itself a little behind schedule today...for which it can only apologise profusely and explain that this particular FOF writer is housebound and more or less uselessly lying about the place, streaming with cold. It's no fun. It reminds me that winter is around the corner and with it probably more colds, more days spent chilled to the bone, or raging with fever, sneezing and coughing and blurry eyes watering. Inspiration is not far away however and, given that I have been listlessly gazing at four walls for days, all I can think of is comfort and warmth and house and home. So here we are. How can Folksy help me through this most troubling of times? Well, let's see!

Well, if you you went down to the woods yesterday... Or the beach, or the park, or just stayed at home and enjoyed a sunny back garden, you might have indulged in the wonderful Bank Holiday pursuit of a great British picnic.

There is something special about eating out of doors - maybe it's the novelty for us Brits (we don't often get the weather, after all), or the freedom from constraints, or just the sheer loveliness of it. But when it comes to outdoor dining, you can't beat a good picnic. From a humble sandwich on a park bench just across from the office, to the full works - blankets, baskets, ball games and a good book - it somehow adds another dimension to lunch... it becomes an event, rather than just a necessity.

I'm not always given to socialising in the MORNINGS, given my tendency to stay up late and be quite groggy the next day, but last Friday morning I did find the time to go to a local coffee morning, held every other week, so that villagers, especially the older ones, can meet, chat, drink coffee and eat biscuits. All very nice, but the most alluring draw for me is the charity stall, where I invariably spend a few pounds and come away with another treasured horde of books, old trinkets and random bits and pieces. My latest prize acquisition is a set of small, strange, randomly coloured knitted mats. I was staring at them again today, wondering which of the old ladies made them and feeling glad that I rescued them. So this was on my mind when I started to think about today's post and I wondered what clever Folksians are up to, granny chic-wise....And here's what I found.

There are many things I like about this blue retro cushion by Crafty Bird Collective. The fabric is stunning, of course, but the maker has also used vintage buttons inherited from her Grandma's collection. A little story behind an already special item makes it even more endearing.But don't get too cosy with images of your sweet old Gran. Sianuska Original Art & Screenprints has created this letterpress screenprint called 'Old Lady Swearwords', a list inspired by her Grandmas. Go grannies!

I can't say anything about this crochet clock that isn't perfectly obvious. Funny, clever, colourful, retro, kitsch....It's glorious! I'm especially in awe of this complex, pretty 'Delilah' mobile. You surely have to have one!

New Beginnings

A few days ago, I was incredibly lucky to be able to hold a newborn meerkat pup in my hands. At only 11 days old, his eyes were still closed, and he was wriggly and fragile and simply adorable. I felt so privileged to witness the early strugglings and squeakings of a new life. And so today's Folksy picks are an homage to that wonderful wee creature and to all new beginnings - enjoy!

I was feeling all smug last Wednesday as I sat down to watch The Code on BBC2... I have always been a bit of a number geek (I love number patterns and sequences, and number puzzles, and have a strangely unexplained aversion to prime numbers) so I thought I might enjoy this short series of programmes, with the added bonus of maybe finding the meaning to life, the universe and everything...

What can I say, after half an hour I was back in my second year of A-Level Mathematics (I never did understand i numbers, what a waste of a year of my life that was!) and soon that smug intellectual mask had slipped from my face and I was thoroughly bewildered - albeit kind of strangely hooked! The best bit was learning that a certain sea snail builds new "rooms" in to his shell, each exactly 1.08 times larger than the previous one... Hmmm, perhaps I need to get out more!

The New Victoriana

We are told we are living through another Age of Austerity. I don't know how that's supposed to feel, what exactly it means. Perhaps now it just means we aren't using our credit cards so much, to buy overpriced handbags and shoes, now that we can't afford to heat our homes. I wonder, are we at all reverting to Victorian values? Will we be wearing high collars, stifling ourselves in overtight corsets, and spending our time putting dead animals in glass jars? And are we secretly becoming rather naughty, darkly obsessed with freakishness and gothic horrors? Only time will tell! But trawling through Folksy Folks' wares for sale, it seems apparent that the taste for Victoriana remains strong, so here are a few of my picks of the day.I don't seem able to create a FOF post without including some sort of pants. So I'll get it out of the way first. I, of course, adore these stripey Victorian bloomers by Gaia Noir...more from there later.
This sepia and gold toned, darkroom photo print is part of 'an ongoing exploration of Victorian process and aesthetics' by Rachel's Darkroom. I love the botanical subject matter and it certainly is most atmospheric.Stitched in Stone has made this beautiful patchwork cushion, inspired by a Victorian postcard. The image has been transferred onto the fabric and she's used vintage lace trim. Perfect for your vintage style home. one sugar hill was inspired to paint this 'Fabled Fox' by a taxidermy fox he once saw. There's some other great work in his Folksy shop, so check it out.
Milly Maybe? creates made to measure, steel boned bustle petticoats, using an original Victorian sewing pattern. I say ditch the gym and hold it all in with some steel boning and corsetry.The Victorians loved all things ghoulish...and in honour of that The Grimm Exhibition has created this glass art decoration using Dracula film images.
I think these upcycled Victorian style boots by Gaia Noir are wonderful. With lace and ribbon and tea-dyed for an authentic look. For steampunk ladies, or perhaps a vintage inspired wedding outfit.

This summer I got married. Being the crafty-type that I am, I was determined to make everything from the wedding invites to the venue decor myself. Today is the anniversary of the death of Robert the Bruce - crowned the first recognised King of Scotland as an independent nation. He fought in many fierce and bloody wars (mainly with the English) in his lifetime, and his legacy was a strong and beautiful country, full of pride, and he remains a national hero.

Being so far back in history, little is known about the details of his life - but my favourite fact relates to his parents: legend has it that his mother kept his father as a captive until he agreed to marry her! It seems there were commitment-phobes even as far back as the 14th century!

I know poor old Charlie Sheen hasn't had much good press lately (and he hasn't really helped himself, let's be honest), but you can't take away from what he achieved early on in his career. And I'm referring specifically to what was, for a brief moment in time, my favourite film simply because he was in it. Yes, I'm talking about Hot Shots!, that spoof of Top Gun that came out in 1991. Have a Heart...

I think we were all blown away last week by the Royal Wedding - the pagenatry, the flags, THE dress, the splendour and the great outpouring of general "Britishness". But we mustn't forget that this was really just a young couple's marriage - their declaration of love for one another, and their commitment for their lives ahead.

But this isn't the only "matter of the heart" that we should be paying tribute to... On this day in 1968 the first heart transplant in the UK was conducted at the National Heart Hospital in Marylebone, London. This amazing, life-saving surgery was undertaken by South African born surgeon Donald Ross, on an unnamed 45 year old man. At the time this was a wonderous new procedure, that (sadly, but necessarily) has become a very "ordinary" operation these days - but has saved, and will continue to save, many many lives each year.

So this week's selection of beautiful Folksy items are all dedicated to "hearts" - symbols of love, and vital organs alike!

Sunday 24th April is Easter Day. I love Easter; it signifies the joy of Spring, marks new life, new beginnings, and when I was a child it also meant there were PRESENTS! I would also be bought a chocolate egg; my brother and I had competitions to see who could make theirs last longest (he always won, should you be interested; he could make an Easter egg last for weeks).
