Making Sweet (Handmade) Music...

On this day...
... way back in 1871, The Royal Albert Hall was officially opened by Queen Victoria, and was one of a number of memorial tributes to the late, much loved and lamented Prince Albert.  The building has become a  beloved national monument, and is probably most famed for hosting the wonderful annual 'Proms' concerts.
Although the uses for this wonderful building are diverse and range from classical concerts to ballet, pop concerts to banquets and award ceremonies to tennis tournaments; the enduring image that springs to my mind would have to be madly passionate conductors in a flying frenzy of batons and sheet music!

So, to commemorate the opening of this amazing and beautiful landmark, and with this image in mind, here are my selection of music manuscript themed items that I have 'Found on Folksy' this week...

Beware the Ides of March

This week we're having a bit of a history lesson, courtesy of all you erudite people at Folksy!

The Ides of March is 15th March in the Roman calendar, and was originally a festive day dedicated to the god Mars. It is also the day in 44 BC that Julius Caesar was stabbed 23 times in the Roman Senate, which gave rise to Shakespeare's famous quotation "Beware the Ides of March" in his eponymous play. Today, the Ides of March is celebrated in Rome with a toga run. Sounds like much more fun to me.

So we're taking a stroll through ancient history this week, focusing on the Roman empire. Prepare to be educated!

Lions, Lambs & Hares...

Well hey, here we are, it's 1st of March already! But instead of bemoaning the fast 'march' (!) of time, we should be heralding the start of spring - the season of hopefulness and new beginnings!

When I was a child my mother was always coming out with old sayings - "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" (I never did really understand that one) or "rain before 7, gone by 11", that kind of thing.  And two of her little gems that have stuck in my mind for this month are "mad as a march hare" (which was often applied to me for some strange reason!) and the fable inspired "March: comes in like a lion, goes out like a lamb" So I have taken inspiration from these for my very first posting on this wonderful blog...
Hello to you all... (and Thank You Mum)!

I hope you like these as much as I do:
